Affirming Our Ancestors: Solidarity Vigil & Speakout for BIWOC

  • Lake Merritt Amphitheater 1 Lake Merritt Boulevard Oakland, CA, 94612 United States (map)

Militant Mourning-
Why do we mobilize for men and remain unmoved by women and trans murders?

A one-time vigil could never be enough to honor and affirm the stolen lives of Breonna Taylor, Oluwatoyin “Toyin” Salau, Riah Milton, Dominique Fells, Nina Pop, Nia Wilson, Charleena Lyles, Kayla Moore, Korryn Gaines, and Sandra Bland. We know that the mechanisms that allow police and misogynists to murder our Black sisters and trans siblings in the streets are rooted in an intergenerational legacy of white terrorism, racial capitalism, and misogynoir. Police terror, reproductive oppression, interpersonal violence, sex trafficking, and femicide are all rooted in the same anti-black, heteropatriarchal, and colonial values that continue to enslave and displace our people. It’s time for us to reclaim our collectivistic values and step into our collective power. To our stolen siblings, we gather on this day to not only honor your life but to channel your powerful legacy to fuel our fight against police terror, transicide and femicide. Only our collective uprising will heal us now.

On Friday, June 26th, we will unite our struggles behind Say Her Name to build up an intersectional feminist/womanist movement for abolition, decolonization, and the end to state-sanctioned and interpersonal femicide and transicide. As transnational feminists, we must center ourselves as survivors and luchadoras holding the line for one another simultaneously as we fight for our collective liberation. We unite our struggles because we know the genocidal culprit hides under the same hood. We summon for radical solidarity and call for the convergence of global movements against gendercide: Say Her Name, Black Trans Lives Matter, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW), Ni Una Mas, and all fights against imperialistic femicide in the global south.
