THE PEOPLE’S CLINIC

The People’s Clinic is an abolitionist wellness center that offers physical and mental healthcare to people who are directly impacted by state and police violence. TPC represents a replicable model of Healing Justice (HJ) in action: a microcosm of decolonized health infrastructure that can be expanded to meet the needs of frontline communities across California, the continental U.S., and in countries where health inequities and state violence disproportionately affect BIPOC and working class people.

By drawing on the strengths of Chinese Medicine and other healing modalities, TPC hosts biweekly wellness gatherings for the impacted communities that APTP is in direct service to and in solidarity with. These gatherings also coincide with Mental Health First hours of operation which provides non 911 first responder services for mental health crises, DV, substance abuse, and other emergencies. The clinic draws upon the revolutionary history of the Young Lords and seeks to honor the legacy of Dr. Mutulu Shakur who used Chinese Medicine to provide critical services to communities that were most impacted by the 1970s heroin epidemic. Ancestral medicine is one of the greatest strengths that our movement has to combat state violence and it is a central value of APTP to utilize healing justice as a strategy for the longevity of organized resistance.

While TPC is based in West Oakland, it is also a mobile operation that seeks to support leaders and communities on the frontlines of state terror both within the U.S. and in solidarity with international movements.

The People's Clinic provides a variety of services and programs including:

  • Acupuncture

  • Clinical herbal prescriptions

  • Chiropractic adjustments

  • Massage

  • Body work

  • Talk therapy

  • A number of other healing modalities that address symptoms of PTSD, grief, addiction, and chronic pain.

  • Telehealth:

    • We  offer remote consultations for participants that do not live in the West Oakland area. Impacted families and former political prisoners throughout California and the country are able to speak to a licensed acupuncturist and receive a custom herbal prescription mailed to them directly.

  • NADA Protocol: The People’s Detox:

    • This initiative aims to provide vital detoxification and harm reduction services to individuals struggling with substance dependency in West Oakland, California. With a focus on those affected by opioid addiction and overall substance dependencies, our weekly clinics offer auricular acupuncture, acupressure, and other holistic treatments to alleviate withdrawal symptoms, while also providing fentanyl test strips and narcan kits to prevent fatal overdoses. Our program aims to reduce opioid dependency and overdose deaths by offering an alternative to conventional western treatment such as methadone and buprenorphine. We are also aiming to provide the community with education and resources to scale back consumption of other addictive substances including alcohol and nicotine. Our program draws inspiration from successful harm reduction models such as Lincoln Detox and On Point NYC which have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing overdose deaths and improving public health outcomes. The NADA acupuncture protocol has been shown to offer a powerful, alternative solution to traditional Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and was successfully used in mitigating the 1970s New York heroin epidemic.

  • Orthopedic Acupuncture for Pain Management:

    • After two years of serving our West Oakland community we have noticed an overwhelming need for chronic pain management. A majority of our participants have lingering injuries that they have either never been treated for, or underwent a procedure and never fully recovered. Participants will be able to receive chiropractic adjustment, trigger point massage, and orthopedic electroacupuncture. Participants who are experiencing pain due to acute or chronic injuries, previous procedures, or general discomfort will be encouraged to sign up while those experiencing more internal symptoms (GI issues, women’s health, insomnia etc.) will be directed to our private acupuncture and herbal consultation sessions.

In its current iteration The People’s Clinic runs three times per week.

  • NADA Protocol (M/W/F)

  • Telehealth for Herbal Consultations  (every Wednesday)

  • People’s Clinic Full services (1st and 3rd Fridays)

  • Ortho Fridays (2nd and 4th Fridays)

  • Talk therapy (TBD)

  • Trauma Support Groups (TBD)
