Anti Police-Terror Project Decries Proposed Expansion of Automatic License Plate Readers in Oakland as Ineffective Tools to Address Violent Crime

This invasive technology is a waste of money that is ineffective at decreasing crime, and will only increase surveillance in communities already impacted by racial profiling & mass incarceration. Oakland police admit they were "unable to find ANY definitive cases where ALPR helped on an active investigation for 2022.”

The city should invest instead in proven violence prevention tactics like job opportunities, affordable housing, substance use services and violence interrupter programs. Violent crime in Oakland will not stop if we continue to invest in technologies that are ineffective at keeping our communities safe.

Friday: Oakland Community, Labor and Education Organizations Hold Virtual Press Conference to Launch 7th Annual Reclaim King’s Radical Legacy Weekend

At Friday’s press conference, organizers will unveil a new campaign to win reparations for Oakland’s Black students. This demand is part of the Black New Deal platform to uplift Oakland Black residents. Other key demands of this platform include making housing a human right and reimagining public safety by refunding the community with half of OPD’s bloated budget.

The Anti Police-Terror Project condemns the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police on May 25, 2020 and the murder of Breonna Taylor on March 13, 2020 by the Louisville Police, as well as the murder of Steven Taylor on April 18, 2020 by the San Leandro Police, and the murder of thousands of other Black and Brown victims of police murder across the U.S., including seven deaths in the Bay Area in the past two months.
